Afterdark Invitational Kicks Off Spring Break

If you want to see what a 5 metre deep snowbase looks like, you should head to Mount Washington Alpine Resort.  That’s exactly what professional skiers and snowboarders are going to do on March 6th for the Afterdark Invitational, the resort’s premier Big Air invite-only event.

“We have so much snow to work with,” explains Event Coordinator Tyler Belsito.  “We’re going to sculpt the perfect jump for the Afterdark Invitational, the crowd and athletes are going to love it!”

The show starts at 7:30pm in front of the Alpine Lodge and features riders invited from the Island, Lower Mainland, and Whistler busting out monster airs under the lights for a $3000 prize purse.

The Afterdark also features Nanaimo’s own DJ All Good who will be pumping out sounds to the crowd in the Vancouver Island Brewery Beer Garden.  All Good recently placed second at the Canadian DMC DJ Championships in Vancouver so you know he’s going spin the vinyl to win at the Afterdark!

Post-event, the VIB Afterdark Afterparty lands at Fat Teddy’s Bar and Grill where Victoria’s own Moka Only takes to the stage for the late-night festivities.  Moka Only is considered one of the pioneers of West Coast hip-hop and is an original member of the Juno award-winning group Swollen Members. The Afterdark Invitational is supported by Dakine, Vancouver Island Brewery, CHEK News, 91.3 The Zone and 106.9 The Wolf.

Following the Big Air event, you don’t need to be a professional rider to enjoy a full week of events during the CHEK News Spring Snowjam.  From March 8-13, there are no less than four great family events to celebrate spring in the mountains.

The Barq’s Snowtubing Festival, featuring the infamous Barq’s Belching Contest, takes place on Monday, March 8.  Beavertails gets in on the act once again with the popular Tail Eating contest on Tuesday, March 9.  Dairyland Crazy Cards will feature exciting family games at card playing stations across the mountain on Thursday, March 11.  And finally, to celebrate the end of the Winter Games, the Old Dutch Mini Olympics offers a fun obstacle course for those willing to take the challenge on Saturday, March 13.

Don’t forget that Mount Washington celebrates night skiing and boarding from 3:30pm to 10:00pm nightly during Spring Break off the Whiskey Jack and Green Chairs.  That’s ten straight nights of riding from Thursday, March 4 to Saturday, March 13!
